Drivers License Renewal in Washington

If you are ready to renew your license, the easiest way to do so is online, via the Washington State Department of Licensing website. Note that you must be between the ages of 24 and 70 in order to file a request to renew drivers license online. To get started, be sure to have the following items and information on hand:

  • Your full name
  • Your Washington driving license number
  • Your date of birth
  • The last four digits of your Social Security Number
  • Your eye color as it appears on your driver license
  • Payment for your drivers license renewal via Visa, American Express or MasterCard
  • Your email address and/or a printer for the confirmation

Note that if you want to retake your picture upon renewal, you can only do so if you visit a driver licensing office in person. Once you complete your online WA drivers license renewal, you can expect your new drivers license to arrive within two to four weeks’ time. If your renewed license does not arrive within 45 days of purchase, contact the Department of Licensing for further instructions.

If you want to renew driving licenses by mail, simply follow the instructions on the renewal letter that you received in the mail. Furthermore, in some instances, you may choose to renew drivers licenses in person at a DOL office. If you prefer to make a visit to your licensing office to complete the task, you may be required to:

  • Pass a vision test.
  • Take a new photo.
  • Pay the required fee.

The cost to renew a license to drive in Washington is $6 per year. As stated prior, currently, you will have to purchase a six-year driver license, making the fee $54.

How to Renew Drivers Licenses From Out of State

If you are not in Washington at the time of your driving license expiration, you will still have the opportunity to renew your driving credential. In order to renew a WA drivers license if you are not in the state, you must first be eligible, meaning:

  • Your license is not suspended.
  • Your license was not revoked.
  • Your license was not surrendered.
  • Your license was not cancelled.
  • You do not owe any outstanding fees to the DOL.

If you want to renew drivers licenses for six years while out of state, you must not plan on returning to Washington for one or more years following your license expiration, and you must have a Social Security Number on file with the DOL. If you renew licenses by mail, you will receive a driving-only credential without a photo or a signature, and your license will be deemed “identity not verified,” so you cannot use it as an ID. To proceed, complete the Driver License Renewal Request While Out-of-State form, and mail it along with the required fee (check or money order payable to “Department of Licensing”) to:

Department of Licensing
646 Okoma Drive, Ste. E
Omak, WA 98841

If you prefer to apply for a year-long extension on your current driver license, complete the Driver License Extension Request form and send it (with $5 payment) to:

Driver Records
Department of Licensing
P.O. Box 3907
Seattle, WA 98124-3907

Be sure to carry your drivers license extension confirmation and your expired license whenever you are operating a motor vehicle.
